Workshop DESCRIPTION

Learn the 8 instructional habits master educators use to engage learners and increase participation.  In this workshop you will learn the explore the Memory Formation Model and learn the cognitive instructional habits that every teacher needs to know to manage attention, keep learning active, and maintain student engagement.  The 8 Engagement Strategies of Master Educators are grounded in research, practical in application, and can be applied immediately in any in-person, online, or hybrid classroom to increase attention, engagement, and participation.  Content will focus on the benefit and application of the strategies in classrooms with vulnerable, ABE, or at-risk learners.

 

  • Workshop Participant will be able…
    • Describe the Wheel of Engagement and identify the strategies on the graphic organizer.
    • Identify how each strategy impacts engagement, attention, and participation. 
    • Evaluate the Memory Formation Model and explore how the model impacts elements of learning for vulnerable learners.
    • Describe the benefit and application of using the strategies as a tool for teaching vulnerable learners. 

Tamara Thompson

Tamara is an award winning educator with over 20 years teaching experience. She is a former Teacher of the Year Award Recipient for Austin Area Alternative Schools, a Michael Jordan Foundation’s Innovation Grant Award recipient, and a Southern Poverty Law’s Teaching for Tolerance Grant Award recipient. She was a YBUSA Teacher Fellows in 2010 and was awarded a Research Doctoral Fellows at the University of North Texas in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in 2010. She is CEO and Founder of Mockingbird Education.

Tamara lives in Dallas, Texas. When not at Mockingbird, she can be found in her garden yelling at weeds, or on a boat begging fish to bite. Her children and husband hope she grows up one day to learn how to cook, sit still and watch a movie, and find her keys.
